I’m Marcus Gunter, a nationally certified ASL interpreter and educator, and the founder of Educo Interpreting LLC. I hold an AA in English-ASL interpreting from American River College, a BA in Deaf Studies from CSU, Northridge, and a Master of Arts in Teaching Interpreting from Western Oregon University, all of which have deeply shaped how I approach interpreting, education, and professional development. I’ve spent my career working across educational, community, and professional settings, and I see interpreting as both a skill and a responsibility. For me, the work goes far beyond accuracy, also focusing on intention, ethics, and understanding how interpreters' decisions shape access, relationships, and trust in real time.
I am deeply committed to supporting the Deaf community by promoting access that is linguistically accurate, culturally responsive, and grounded in respect. At the same time, I advocate for interpreters by encouraging ethical working conditions, thoughtful teaming and supervision, and development models that recognize the complexity of our work. I believe high-quality interpreting happens when Deaf people’s needs are centered and interpreters are supported, challenged, and accountable in their practice.
In addition to interpreting, teaching and professional development are a major focus of my work. I design and facilitate workshops, retreats, and trainings that emphasize confidence, decision-making, supervision, and sustainable skill growth. I’m especially passionate about helping interpreters move beyond self-doubt and toward trusting the skills they already have, while continuing to reflect, learn, and grow.
I’m deeply invested in community-based learning and reflective practice. I believe interpreters grow best when they have space to analyze their work honestly, receive meaningful feedback, and learn alongside peers who value curiosity and vulnerability. At the heart of everything I do is a desire to help interpreters build confident, sustainable careers while strengthening a profession that serves the Deaf community with integrity, care, and respect.
