Professional Development Focus

This workshop is designed to support both newly graduated ASL interpreters and working interpreters stepping into the freelance world. Participants will explore essential topics such as navigating agency relationships, setting rates and terms, securing necessary credentials, maintaining ethical boundaries, and finding mentorship. With practical tools and real-world guidance, this workshop empowers emerging and transitioning interpreters to confidently enter the field with clarity, professionalism, and a plan for continued growth.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

Identify and compare at least three types of interpreting work settings and list one advantage and one challenge of each.
Describe the steps to legally establish themselves as a freelance interpreter, including registering an LLC, acquiring insurance, and a business license.
Evaluate at least two interpreter agency contracts and identify key red flags and favorable terms.
Describe at least two strategies for working successfully with mentors and experienced team interpreters, supported by a sample outreach message.
Complete a personal “next steps” action plan with three concrete professional development or business goals for the next 30 days.

Presenter

Marcus Gunter is an experienced instructor, mentor, and certified interpreter with over 15 years in the field. He has studied at American River College, CSU Northridge, and Western Oregon University, providing him with a well-rounded approach to interpreting theory and practice. With additional expertise in education and technology, Marcus combines these fields to enhance interpreting work and shares his passion for lifelong learning with others in the profession.

Registration and Cost

Registration for Non-CEU participants is $35, $55 for CEU participants. Cancellations made by June 9, 2025 will receive a refund of the total amount paid minus a 5% processing fee. No refunds will be given after June 9, 2025. No partial participation or partial CEUs will be given.

This workshop is offered for 0.5 CEUs in the Professional Studies area at the “Little to No” Content Knowledge level. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
