Reset in the Sun: Grounded Growth in Palm Springs is a retreat-based professional development workshop that invites interpreters to slow the pace, sharpen their awareness, and engage deeply with their work in a setting designed for clarity and reflection. Using structured interpreting practice, peer feedback, high-pressure scenario analysis, and guided supervision, participants examine how their decisions, delivery, and professional judgment shift across contexts and demands. Framed by the calm, intentional rhythm of Palm Springs, the workshop emphasizes staying grounded while adapting skillfully, supporting interpreters in strengthening performance, ethical decision-making, and reflective practice without urgency or excess.

Objectives

Participants will:

Analyze the role of interpreter identity and positionality in shaping relationships, authority, and access within interpreted settings and reflect on how these factors affect professional decisions and outcomes. (PPO forward)
Interpret a source message across three different registers and complete a self-assessment and peer feedback form evaluating clarity, tone, and appropriateness.
Give structured feedback on a peer’s interpreting performance using a selected professional framework and submit a brief self-reflection on the experience.
Analyze a high-pressure interpreting scenario and write a reflection describing their decision-making process, ethical considerations, and potential outcomes.
Participate in two structured supervision sessions using a recognized model and submit a written insight summarizing what they learned and how they will apply it in their practice.

Presenter

Marcus Gunter is an experienced instructor, mentor, and certified interpreter with over 20 years in the field. He has studied at American River College, CSU Northridge, and Western Oregon University, providing him with a well-rounded approach to interpreting theory and practice. With additional expertise in education and technology, Marcus combines these fields to enhance interpreting work and shares his passion for lifelong learning with others in the profession.

Registration and Cost

Registration is limited to 10 participants. A Non-Refundable deposit of $500 is required to reserve a spot. Full payment must be made by May 15, 2026. Cancellations made by May 15, 2026 will receive a refund of the total amount paid minus the deposit amount, plus a 5 percent processing fee. No refunds will be given after May 15, 2026.The total cost for each participant is $1599 ($1199 each for double occupancy)
