Professional Development Focus

This multi day retreat will include activities, discussion, and practice on a variety of topics such as:

Introspection and professional goal setting.
Differentiating and practicing various methods of analyzing interpreting work.
Methods, techniques, and practice in interpreting skill building.
Maintaining the integrity of and promoting the advancement of the interpreting field.
Utilizing technology in interpreting work.

Objectives

Participants will be provided opportunities to focus on individual, team, and communitydevelopment. By the end of the workshop, participants will:

create a personalized developmental plan that identifies and addresses three specific areas of the hierarchy of needs model, with measurable goals for each area.
compare and contrast four different methods for discussing interpreting work with colleagues in a written summary and demonstrate their understanding by actively participating in at least two group discussions during the session.
provide specific examples in a written reflection demonstrating their understanding of the effects of an interpreter’s decisions when working solo, highlighting at least three key impacts.
design a critique tool and use critique tools in both a self-critique and a peer-critique session, submitting summaries for both types of experiences.
create a technological tool using a provided resource and will demonstrate how it can be applied to their professional work in a 5-minute presentation to the group.

Presenter

Marcus Gunter is an experienced instructor, mentor, and certified interpreter with over 15 years in the field. He has studied at American River College, CSU Northridge, and Western Oregon University, providing him with a well-rounded approach to interpreting theory and practice. With additional expertise in education and technology, Marcus combines these fields to enhance interpreting work and shares his passion for lifelong learning with others in the profession.

Registration and Cost

Registration is limited to about 10 participants. A Non-Refundable deposit of $500 is required to reserve a spot. If full payment is not made by deadlines, your reservation may be given to waitlisted participants. Cancellations made by May 31, 2025 will receive a refund of the total amount paid minus the deposit amount.
