Professional Development Focus

Many ASL interpreters struggle with the tendency to over-prepare for assignments, spending excessive time researching, scripting potential interactions, or worrying about unknown variables. While preparation is essential, over-preparation can lead to mental fatigue, self-doubt, and decreased adaptability in live settings. This workshop will help interpreters find a balance between readiness and confidence, ensuring they are mentally and physically prepared without being overly reliant on pre-planned material.Participants will engage in interactive activities, guided discussions, and practical exercises that emphasize trusting their skills, developing cognitive and physical resilience, and adapting on the spot.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

Recognize the signs of over-preparation and its impact on performance, stress levels, and mental agility.
Develop efficient preparation strategies that balance knowledge acquisition with adaptability.
Strengthen cognitive flexibility through improvisation exercises and real-time decision-making scenarios.
Improve physical readiness by focusing on body awareness, self-care, and reducing interpreting fatigue.
Build self-trust and confidence through mindfulness and reflective practice.

Presenter

Marcus Gunter is an experienced instructor, mentor, and certified interpreter with over 20 years in the field. He has studied at American River College, CSU Northridge, and Western Oregon University, providing him with a well-rounded approach to interpreting theory and practice. With additional expertise in education and technology, Marcus combines these fields to enhance interpreting work and shares his passion for lifelong learning with others in the profession.

Registration and Cost

Registration for participants is $55. Cancellations made by April 26, 2026 will receive a refund of the total amount paid minus a 5% processing fee. No refunds will be given after April 26, 2026. No partial participation or partial CEUs will be given.
